Dr. Malki: Cosmetic dentistry is also a very exciting aspect of dentistry.
Porcelain veneers are pieces of porcelain that are made very
thin that cover and mask imperfections in the teeth. What they
can do is they can replace a single tooth or a full mouth of
teeth. With porcelain veneers, we can really help patients
achieve the perfect smile that they've always dreamed of,
because they can tell us specifically what they want, from the
shape, the color, and size of the teeth.
The way porcelain veneers are made is the teeth have to be
prepared ever so slightly; a very thin layer of tooth structure
has to be removed. Once that thin layer is removed, we then take
an impression of the teeth. From that impression, the laboratory
then fabricates a stone model of the teeth, and off that stone
model, they create the porcelain veneers.
Another very important advancement in dentistry has been the
CEREC. The CEREC is an in-office CADCAM milling machine, which
means it now allows us to create crowns or caps, which is this
same, in the office, all in one visit. We design the crown on a
computer. Once the crown has been designed on the computer, it's
then sent off to a special machine. That machine then cuts the
porcelain and creates the crown for the patient. What used to
take 2 to 3 weeks now can be done in about 1 1/2 hours.
