Dental Crown Uses

Dental crowns are caps that are placed over individual teeth in order to mask structural imperfections or reinforce a damaged tooth. Dental crowns differ from veneers, inlays, and onlays because they encase the entire tooth, rather than just a portion of it. At our dentistry practice, we use crowns to address:

Large Fillings or Cavities

Patients at our practice with particularly large fillings may have crowns placed over their teeth to support the filling and tooth. This can restore chewing ability and overall dental function.

Chips, Cracks, and Wear

In addition, patients whose teeth have been cracked, chipped, or severely worn down can opt for dental crowns to restore strength and shape to the tooth.

Root Canal Infection

The nerves, blood vessels, and other soft tissues in the central canals of the tooth can become infected due to cavities or injury. Crowns are commonly placed after root canal therapy to lend strength and support to the tooth.

Securing Dental Bridges

Crowns can also be used to hold a traditional dental bridge in place. A bridge can replace one to three teeth in a row, and they are secured in place with two crowns that are placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap.

Replace a Missing Tooth

Dental implants can be placed in the jawbone to replace missing teeth. With crowns, a single implant is placed in the jaw. After the dental implant has integrated with the surrounding tissues, a crown can be attached to the implant.

Restore & Protect Compromised Teeth

A dental crown covers a broken or weakened tooth, protecting it from further damage. Dr. Stephen J. Malki uses all-porcelain crowns that look just like natural teeth, and uses CEREC® technology for fast results. After placement, dental crowns can be cared for just like your natural teeth.

Dental Crown Materials

Dental crowns can be made of metal, porcelain, or a combination of the two. Dr. Malki will help patients decide which material is best suited to their specific needs.

How Are Dental Crowns Placed?

The placement of dental crowns can be completed at Dr. Malki’s River Edge, NJ, dentistry office, serving Paramus and other areas of Bergen County.
Our dentist employs the advanced technology of CEREC so he can fit, craft, and place crowns in one office visit, as opposed to two separate appointments.

Examination

First, our dentist examines the affected tooth to make sure it is well-suited for a dental crown. This may include digital x-rays to evaluate the health of the tooth’s root and surrounding bone.

Tooth Preparation

Dr. Malki then preps the tooth that is receiving the crown by removing any signs of decay or infection. In addition, a small amount of tooth structure is removed to make room for the crown.

Digital Impressions

We take digital photos of the area to obtain a comprehensive view of the surrounding teeth and jaw alignment. This information helps Dr. Malki create a permanent crown that fits seamlessly into the patient’s mouth.

Design

Dr. Malki uses these photos, along with CEREC software, to design a custom dental crown made out of porcelain.

Fabrication

It typically takes about 15 minutes for the CEREC machine to mill the crown out of a solid block of porcelain. This helps us avoid the need for a temporary crown while patients wait for a lab-made restoration.

Placement

Once the crown has been crafted, Dr. Malki bonds the crown to the patient’s tooth using durable dental cement.

Gold and Metal Crowns

If a patient is receiving a gold or metal crown, Dr. Malki can complete the procedure in two easy office visits. The procedure is relatively similar, except that the dental crowns are milled by an outside lab. In this case, Dr. Malki provides patients with a temporary crown while the custom crown is being created.

Why Choose Dental Crowns?

Oral Health Benefits

The main benefit of dental crowns is that they restore the strength, health, and chewing ability of damaged teeth. Patients whose teeth have been weakened may experience pain, discomfort, and sensitivity, which can be addressed with this treatment. In addition, broken teeth can have an adverse effect on alignment of the jaw, which can lead to bone deterioration or TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder.

Cosmetic Benefits

Porcelain crowns also offer many cosmetic benefits. Porcelain crowns mimic the color of natural teeth and can be used to create a seamless look. This is especially useful for treatment of the front teeth. These crowns can also be used on the back teeth and are less conspicuous than their metal counterparts. In most cases, dentists recommend porcelain crowns because they resemble the natural teeth.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

When maintained with routine dental care, crowns can last up to 15 years. Be sure to brush twice a day, floss daily, and visit the dentist at least twice a year.
