Do I Qualify for Teeth Whitening?
Teeth bleaching is a common cosmetic treatment used safely on a wide range of patients. It is most often recommended for patients with mild to moderate discoloration. However, while a highly effective option, teeth whitening is less successful against:
- Intrinsic stains
- Extreme tooth sensitivity
- Worn enamel
Because dental ceramic and composite resin do not respond to bleaching, we typically suggest that patients undergo any whitening before receiving a restoration. If you already have a crown or porcelain veneer on your front-facing teeth, you may need it replaced so that it matches your whitened teeth. We can design a new crown or veneer that matches your enhanced smile for a seamless result.
How It Works
During your visit, one of our dental hygienists will clean your teeth to ensure no food particles interfere with the bleaching agent. Then, we can place a protective layer of plastic over your gums to prevent irritation.
Teeth whitening is a fast and easy way to achieve the results you desire.
When your teeth are fully prepared, Dr. Malki will begin applying the whitening gel over your teeth, taking care to cover the entire surface for an even result. The gel will remain on your teeth for only a few minutes before removal. Usually, we apply multiple coats of the whitening agent to achieve the desired effects. In most cases, the entire treatment lasts less than an hour./p>
Maintaining Your Results
One of the best ways to keep your teeth bright and beautiful after a whitening treatment is to practice good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing your teeth every day helps prevent stains from settling on the surface. In addition, you should limit your consumption of stain-causing foods and drinks, such as tea, coffee, and red wine.
We can help maintain the color of your smile at your biannual dental appointments, as well. Your hygienist can remove plaque and other types of buildup which affect the color of your smile and polish your teeth to keep them white. If stains or yellowing return, Dr. Malki can perform a touch-up treatment to restore the color of your smile.
