Missing teeth are a common oral health issue that can dramatically affect your quality of life. You might even find yourself covering your smile when you speak and laugh.
At Malki Dental in Bergen County, NJ, we offer dental implants to help patients with any number of missing teeth restore function and beauty to their smiles.
Why are dental implants the preferred method of tooth replacement for patients throughout River Edge and Paramus?
Top 3 Benefits of Dental Implant Treatment
Dental implants are built with titanium, a strong and biocompatible medical-grade metal. As long as you visit the dentist regularly and practice good dental care, your dental implants can last a lifetime.
Because they replace your tooth roots, dental implants are considered the closest thing to natural teeth. Following successful osseointegration, the posts can even prevent bone resorption.
In addition to restoring your ability to eat comfortably and speak clearly, implants allow you to smile with confidence. For patients who cover their smile because of missing teeth, this benefit can be life-changing.

If you are missing some or all of your natural teeth, you are not alone...
Dental implants can help you enjoy life to the fullest, no matter how many missing teeth you have...
Dr. Stephen J. Malki can create a custom implant-supported dental crown that beautifully replaces a single tooth.
If you are missing several adjacent teeth, Dr. Malki can design a bridge or partial denture that completes your smile.
If you are missing one or both arches of teeth, we can stabilize your denture with All-on-4 implants or another customized solution.
Certain factors can affect your candidacy for dental implants...
You must have sufficient jawbone density to support implants. If you have suffered significant jawbone recession, bone grafting may be able to restore your candidacy.
Smoking increases your risks of serious complications including dental implant failure. If you smoke, you will need to quit before beginning treatment.
Periodontal disease weakens the hard and soft tissues supporting your smile. These patients will need to undergo treatment before receiving dental implants.
Certain health conditions such as diabetes and autoimmune disorders can impair your body's ability to heal. Ensuring they are controlled can help prevent complications.
Is There an Age Limit?
Your overall health and a desire to improve your quality of life are much more important considerations than your age. We currently have patients from 40 years old to 80+ years old. Patients in their 90s have even successfully undergone dental implant treatment.
But are dental implants a reliable solution?
High Success Rates
Backed by Our Warranty
Research has found dental implants have a 95% success rate, however, there is a small chance of failure. If this occurs within the first few years, dental implant replacement is typically successful.
If this step is necessary, the treatment is free of charge until we get it right. The only thing you need to do is make sure you come in for regularly scheduled visits and maintain your oral health at home.
An abutment piece connects the implant to your restoration...
Does this require special tools?
We Use Advanced Technology to Plan Your Procedure
Our Bergen County practice, serving River Edge and Paramus, uses sophisticated technology to help you achieve the best results. It is possible to replace all of the lower teeth with an overdenture that is supported by only two to five implants. In some cases, it might be best to replace your back teeth with an implant for each tooth to provide additional strength. Our technology will help us determine the best strategy for you.
Dr. Malki can use digital x-rays to determine the optimal location for each implant. He will also assess your bite and the density of your jaw to ensure proper distribution of chewing and biting force for a stable, secure result.
Knowing what to expect before treatment is important...
The Initial Dental Implant Consultation Is Crucial
During your initial consultation, Dr. Malki will perform a thorough examination to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. He will review your medical history as well as answer any questions you may have about dental implants. If your jaw has been damaged or atrophied, Dr. Malki may also recommend that you undergo a preliminary procedure such as a sinus lift or a bone graft to ensure the best possible results.
Dr. Malki is one of only a small percentage of dentists in the country with his credentials in implant dentistry.
Many dentists do not surgically place implants themselves; they usually provide referrals to outside oral surgeons for this portion of the process. However, at our dental practice, Dr. Malki performs each step of the procedure himself. This makes the dental implant experience seamless for our patients. Dr. Malki is one of only a small percentage of dentists in the country with his credentials in implant dentistry. You can feel comfortable knowing that you have chosen a highly qualified and skilled implant dentist.
Implant placement involves several stages...
To begin, Dr. Malki will administer local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
He will then make one or more incisions in the gums, which gives him access to the underlying bone.
The implants will then be placed in the jawbone.
After the implants are in place, Dr. Malki can close the incisions in the gums with sutures.
After the first surgery, you will need several months to heal...
During the Healing Period, Your Implants Will Fuse with Your Jaw
Most patients need anywhere from three to six months to heal completely before advancing to the next phase of treatment. During this time, the dental implants fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration, creating a permanent and stable foundation for your restorations.
You will meet with Dr. Malki regularly during the recovery period. Once he determines your implants have successfully integrated with your jawbone, he can approve you for the next phase of surgery.
Once you have healed, you can move onto the next stage of treatment...
In this procedure, Dr. Malki will re-open the gums and attach abutments. Most patients need a couple of weeks after this procedure to allow the gums to heal.
After your gums have completely healed, you can come into our office to have impressions of your teeth, gums, and abutments taken.
After your impressions have been taken, our trusted dental lab can craft your custom restorations in approximately two weeks.
When your prosthetic is ready, you can return to our office and Dr. Malki can attach it to the implant abutments.

How long will it take to complete the treatment?
It All Depends on Your Capacity to Heal
Because everyone heals at a different rate, the entire process can take anywhere from six to 12 months or longer to complete. Other factors include the type and number of implants you need, and the need for any bone grafting.
There are treatment options that are faster, such as traditional dentures; however, this method does not prevent bone loss, or give the type of natural look and feel that implants do.

What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed in the jawbone and anchor prosthetic teeth. Because dental implants integrate with the jawbone, they are more durable and stable than tooth replacement alternatives such as dental bridges or dentures. Replacing missing teeth prevents oral health problems caused by gaps in the mouth, including periodontal disease, bone deterioration, and difficulty chewing or speaking.
With the latest dental technology advancements, implants are safer and more versatile than ever before. They can be used to support a single crown, or anchor a bridge or set of dentures to replace multiple teeth. After your dental implants have been placed, you’ll be able to chew, speak, and smile with renewed confidence.
Additionally, most research has shown that implants have been successful for over 30 years. However, our goal is to make them so they last a lifetime. This is much improved from dentures, which are 5 years, and/or bridges where the expected time of use is between 7-10 years.
Is Treatment Painful?
Most of our patients report that they feel very little if any pain during the procedure. In fact, many patients do not have to use any pain pills. Your decision to use implants will help you to avoid much pain and discomfort in the long term.
Besides, given the overall health care benefits, you should not deny yourself proper treatment out of fear of pain. As with any medical or dental procedure, your attending doctor, the dentist, is equipped to provide you with appropriate treatment, including any pain medicines you need.
Also, if you are especially fearful, phobic, or pain sensitive you have the option of doing the procedures with sedation dentistry.
How this works: We work with an anesthesiologist who can sedate you during the procedure as you rest peacefully while we do our work. With this option you barely remember the procedure the next day, but get a ton of dental work done in just 1 visit.
Finally, to make sure you are comfortable when you leave our office, you’ll get a prescription if necessary. Plus we will call to make sure that you are not in any abnormal amounts of discomfort. Our goal is to give you stronger, more comfortable teeth, without experience pain or discomfort!
What can I expect to pay for this treatment?
The Cost of Implants: The Basics
Every patient's needs are different and the cost of rehabilitating a smile with dental implants is directly related to the extent of treatment the patient requires. In other words, a patient in otherwise outstanding oral health who needs to replace a single tooth can expect to pay less than a patient with gum disease, jawbone recession, and an entire arch of missing teeth. The best way to gain a sense of what your implant treatment will cost is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Malki.
Unfortunately, despite the many practical benefits of dental implants, they are rarely covered by insurance. However, our practice can help find a way to make this treatment affordable for you.
Paying for Treatment
We can help you coordinate financing through CareCredit®, a third-party lender that offers low-interest and interest-free payment plans based on your credit score.
Credit Cards and Personal Loans
If you do not qualify for CareCredit, or if you can secure a better interest rate elsewhere, we accept all major credit cards. Personal loans are another option you can explore.
Implants are certainly not cheap. What makes them worth the added expense?
Implants are the only restorative solution that can stop bone recession in the jaw after losing a tooth.
Eating raw fruits and vegetables and other nutritious, fiber-rich foods is incredibly difficult with standard dentures. Implants allow you to eat the varied diet you need.
Comfort and Confidence
Implants are an investment that can end irritation from a loose-fitting denture, gaps in your smile, an imbalanced bite, and impaired speech.
