Maintain Good Oral Health with Dental Cleanings & Exams
Routine dental cleanings and examinations are critical to maintaining good oral health. Dr. Stephen J. Malki and his team at Malki Dental provide professional dental cleanings at their Bergen County, NJ, practice to gently remove plaque and tartar buildup from the surface of the teeth and gums. During your appointment, we will also identify any dental concerns in their earliest stages when treatment is more straightforward and cost-effective. These visits can not only protect your smile but also minimize your risk of more serious health concerns as well.
The Importance of Regular Visits
Daily brushing and flossing removes plaque from teeth and gums, but cannot completely eliminate infection-causing bacteria. As bacteria builds up in the mouth, especially in hard-to-reach tooth surfaces and gum lines, it puts the patient at risk of dental decay and gum disease. The only way to completely remove this harmful build-up is with a professional cleaning.
In addition to the cleaning, Dr. Malki will also perform a thorough oral examination. By identifying oral health concerns as soon as possible, complications and expensive restorative treatments can be minimized or even avoided altogether. Professional exams are also important to your overall health, as gum disease has been linked to serious conditions such as stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.
What to Expect during Your Appointment
Children and adults alike should have a professional dental exam and cleaning at least twice a year. Some patients will need to visit us more often, particularly if they have conditions that require monitoring and periodic treatment, such as periodontal disease.
One of our hygienists will perform your dental cleaning. She will use a scaling instrument that gently but thoroughly eliminates tartar and plaque from the tooth surfaces and along the gum line. Your teeth will then be polished with an electric brush and a specialized toothpaste. Finally, the hygienist will floss your teeth.
Professional dental cleanings remove decay-causing plaque buildup that cannot be addressed with at-home oral hygiene care.
Patients may also receive a fluoride treatment that adds another protective element to your teeth to help keep dental decay at bay. Some patients may be scheduled to undergo additional treatments, such as scaling and root planing, to combat mild periodontal disease.
Dr. Malki will conduct a visual examination of your teeth, gums, and any restorations, such as dental crowns, keeping an eye out for the slightest sign of decay or infection. He will then perform an oral cancer screening to identify abnormal tissues in the mouth, near the throat, and around the mouth. You will also be screened for symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, such as jaw misalignment, which involves discussing any symptoms you have noticed and examining your jaw joints. If our team finds any concerns, we may use GURU patient education software to inform you of your condition and the available treatment options.
To evaluate the integrity and structure of your teeth, jaw, and restorations, x-rays may be taken of your mouth. Digital x-rays are an important and trusted diagnostic tool, helping your dentist to assess damage and decay and make treatment plans based on your unique needs.
