What to Expect During Dental Implant Surgery

The process of receiving dental implants involves several stages, but Dr. Stephen J. Malki can perform all aspects of dental implant surgery at our River Edge, NJ, practice. The surgery itself involves anesthesia, incisions, and drilling to place the implants. Recovery takes a few months, after which implant abutments are placed to accommodate your implant-supported restoration. Once you have healed from this procedure, Dr. Malki can place your final restorations. While this may sound like a lengthy process, having every phase of your procedure performed at Malki Dental can help ensure the success of your operation. We provide start-to-finish  services all under one roof for the convenience of our patients.

Dental Implant Surgery

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Malki will perform a thorough examination to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. He will review your medical history as well as answer any questions you may have about dental implants. Dr. Malki may also recommend that you undergo a preliminary procedure such as a sinus lift or a bone graft to ensure the best possible results.

First Surgery

To begin, Dr. Malki will administer local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. He will then make one or more incisions in the gums, which gives him access to the underlying bone. The implants will then be placed in the jawbone through these incisions and attach an abutment, or end cap, to each implant. After the implants and abutments are in place, he can close the incisions in the gums with sutures.

The healing process is perhaps the longest part of the dental implant surgery timeline. Most patients need anywhere from three to six months to heal completely before advancing to the next phase of treatment. During this time, the dental implants fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration, creating a permanent and stable foundation for your restorations.

You will meet with Dr. Malki regularly during the recovery period. Once he determines your implants have successfully integrated with your jawbone, he can approve you for the next phase of surgery.

Second Procedure

The second procedure in the dental implant surgery process is less extensive than the first. In this procedure, Dr. Malki will re-open the gums to expose the abutments. Most patients need up to a month after this procedure to allow the gums to heal.

Final Restorations

After your gums have completely healed, you can come into our office to have impressions of your teeth and gums taken. These impressions will be used to create your final restorations. We offer a wide range of implant-supported restorations—including dentures and crowns—in a variety of materials. You can discuss your options with Dr. Malki to decide which one is best for you. After your impressions have been created, our trusted dental lab can craft your custom restorations in approximately two weeks. When your prosthetic is ready, you can return to our office and Dr. Malki can attach it to the exposed implant abutments.
