Dental implants offer the most secure anchor for dental restorations. They are becoming increasingly popular because tooth loss is so widespread among older adults.

At Malki Dental in Bergen County, NJ, Dr. Stephen J. Malki discusses dental implant and tooth loss statistics; these numbers show us how common tooth loss is among adults in the United States.

Tooth Loss Statistics in Adults 64 and Younger

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), adults between the ages of 20 to 64 have an average of 24.92 teeth remaining.

Adults should have 32 teeth, or 28 if they've had all four wisdom teeth pulled. If these patients had their wisdom teeth removed, these statistics indicate that they are missing about three teeth.

The NIDCR also reports that about 3.75 percent of adults between 20 and 64 are missing all of their teeth. Total tooth loss is more likely to affect patients that are older, have lower income levels, and a history of smoking.

Tooth Loss Statistics in Adults 65 and Older

Although younger people can suffer from tooth loss, tooth loss is most often a problem for those 65 and older.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 13 percent of adults aged 65 to 74 have lost all of their teeth. Patients over the age of 75 were twice as likely to suffer from complete tooth loss, with 26 percent of patients in this age group being edentulous.

The NIDCR also reports that seniors over 65 have an average of 18.90 teeth remaining; patients that are most likely to be missing some or all of their teeth include seniors, smokers, people with lower income levels, and women.

Statistics Show Dental Implant Treatment Is on the Rise

Tooth loss is a growing problem across the country. According to the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), up to 36 million Americans are missing all of their teeth and 120 million patients are missing at least one tooth. The ACP estimates that the number of patients with partial tooth loss should increase to 200 million patients in coming years.

With so many people missing one or more teeth, and more expected to suffer from tooth loss in the future, dental implant treatment is on the rise.

In fact, the prevalence of dental implants increased by 5 percent between 1999 to 2000 and 2015 to 2016, as reported in the Journal of Dental Research.
