Factors that Can Affect Bone Grafting Costs

Dental implants are an excellent solution for restoring a smile that has been impacted by tooth loss. However, if a significant amount of time has passed since the teeth were removed, it is possible for bone loss to occur. In such cases, bone loss can prevent patients from qualifying for dental implants. When bone loss is evident, Dr. Stephen J. Malki can perform bone grafting prior to dental implant surgery to provide added support. Although this will add an extra two to three months to the overall treatment timeline, it will improve the success rate of your dental implants.

During bone grafting, bone will be harvested and inserted into the jawbone through an incision made in the gum line. As the graft integrates with nearby tissues, it will regenerate healthy tissue, providing the necessary support for a dental implant. Dr. Malki will discuss the details of the process with you during your initial consultation at our River Edge, NJ practice, including the costs involved. Bone grafting cost can range and is dependent on a variety of factors.

Type of Bone Graft and Complexity of Treatment

Bone grafting can be performed on the lower or upper jaw, depending on the location of the bone loss. Upper bone grafting is referred to as a sinus lift. Because this procedure involves the sinus membrane, it is more complex and tends to cost more. The size of the area requiring bone grafting can also affect the overall cost. Smaller treatment areas will cost less than those that need more grafting material.

Materials Used

Bone tissue can be taken from another area of your body, such as the hip, chin, or tibia. It can also be provided by a cow, cadaver, or synthetically grown. When bone is taken from your own body, it involves a second surgical site and additional anesthesia, thus increasing the cost of your bone grafting procedure. Although more costly, using your own bone tissue provides the safest and most effective option.

Type of Anesthesia

Bone grafting can be performed under local anesthesia. However, the amount required will affect the total cost of treatment. In addition, if the procedure is more complex, or you have difficulty numbing, Dr. Malki may recommend general anesthesia to provide optimal comfort. Because general anesthesia is more expensive than local and requires careful monitoring during the surgery, it costs more.

Location of the Surgery

With Dr. Malki’s exceptional skill and state-of-the-art facilities, he is able to perform all bone grafting procedures in-office. This eliminates the need for an oral surgeon and surgical facility. Having the procedure performed by Dr. Malki will provide lower treatment costs, as well as the added convenience of the same doctor throughout your entire treatment plan, from grafting and implant surgery, to restoration placement.
