Examples of a Dental Emergency

The primary focus of emergency services is to eliminate severe pain and keep you out of immediate danger (especially with infections or abscesses). Minor cosmetic issues such as a chip in your tooth are not usually dire and can wait to be addressed until the next business day. Dental emergencies can include:

  • A broken or lost tooth
  • An infected or abscessed tooth
  • Damaged or lost restorations, such as a filling or crown
  • Severe facial or oral trauma

Dental emergencies may include uncontrolled bleeding and severe pain, especially when biting down. If you have an infected or abscessed tooth, you may also experience:

  • Fever
  • Foul taste and smell in the mouth
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Swelling in the upper or lower jaw

Importance of Seeking Prompt Treatment

Without prompt treatment, dental emergencies could result in permanent tooth loss or the development of an infection. If an infection is already present, it could enter the bloodstream and cause a stroke. Dental emergencies can put your overall health at risk, so it is critical that you contact our office right away if you are experiencing a dental emergency.

Our Emergency Dental Services

Dr. Malki or another on-call dentist is available around the clock to handle emergencies as they arise.  If you lost a tooth, we recommend bringing it to our office in a cup of milk, leaving any tissues attached. We can attempt to reattach the tooth when you arrive.

Dental emergencies can put your overall health at risk, so it is critical that you contact our office right away if you are experiencing symptoms of a dental emergency.

If you have a broken or lost restoration, we can place a temporary prosthetic to keep your tooth protected until you can come in to get a new crown or filling. An infected or abscessed tooth may require root canal therapy to eliminate the infection. We can also prescribe pain medication and antibiotics, which can help prevent the infection from spreading to your other teeth or from entering the bloodstream.
